Richmond Police: James River victim assaulted woman before death

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Richmond police say, the man who drove his car into the James River assaulted a woman less than thirty minutes before his death. 27-year-old Barry Scott was found dead inside his submerged car Wednesday.

According to Scott's family, Scott had been fighting with his girlfriend. They told NBC12, domestic issues have plagued the couple for years and it seems, may have finally drove Scott over the edge.

"He would tell me time after time he was trying to get away from her," said Melissa Walton, Scott's mother. "I just never thought that this would happen."

Richmond police say, Scott assaulted a woman in the 3600 block of Stockton Street.

Neighbor Rhonda Crump says, she opened her door Tuesday night to a woman begging for help. She says, she had been stabbed in the throat.

"She said, 'he stabbed me and now he's stealing my car,'" said Crump. Crump then called 911. The woman was rushed to VCU Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Crump believes the car Scott drove off the dock was his girlfriend's vehicle.

Detectives do not suspect foul play in Scott's death.
