RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Many parents do their best to save money entertaining and clothing their children. Here is how to save at many local shops around town - and it won't cost you a dime.
It's been five years since Kate Hall created RichmondMom.com as a go-to resource for local parents.
"It's now turned into an online magazine, so we have about 16+ writers who write about all sorts of topics," said Hall.
The site now gets about 200,000 unique visitors a year. Kate is busy with her own three kids, plus she wants to concentrate on writing her own children's books, so she's sold the site to the owners of "Hip to be Round".
"I've always been a supporter of the site, love RichmondMom.com as a reader, I've loved being a partner and a sponsor through Hip to be Round," said new owner Khrista Donahue.
Along with money-saving articles, the site offers the savvy saver card. It was created to save you money while helping local businesses make it through the recession.
"People love that card so we want to keep the card and we want to expand the program significantly," said Donahue.
Right after Stephanie Maynard's son Grant was born, she discovered the savvy card. She didn't have to pay the set up fee associated with her son's 529 college account.
"We were setting up the account and we noticed that it was on there, and there's a code, and you just plug it in, and bam you get to save $25," said Maynard.
And she loves the 20% discount buying Grant's clothes at Hip to be Round. Through the card, you'll get 20% off the best rates at Great Wolf Lodge. You'll score a free week at American Family Fitness. Need glasses? The card saves you 30% at the Virginia Eye Institute and buy one get one free admission to the Science Museum on Fridays.
"Every single day, you can find deals that will save your family a ton of money," said Donahue.
You can pick up the savvy saver card at any Sweet Frog, download it for free from the website, or they'll mail you a hard copy.
