BRUNSWICK, VA (WWBT) - Nearly a dozen people are taken to the hospital after a charter bus runs off the road on Interstate 85 in Brunswick.

State Police tell us around 6:00 a.m. Saturday, the bus was carrying more than 40 church members from Baltimore, Maryland to Chester, South Carolina. According to police, the driver says he swerved to avoid hitting an animal and ended up in the ditch.

I-85 South was closed for about 30 minutes while crews tended to the injured. Some passengers had to be removed through a side window. 11 people sustained minor injuries in the crash. 5 were taken to Southside Regional in Petersburg, while 6 others were taken to South Hill Community Memorial. Some of the passengers have since been released, but all are expected to be okay.

The unharmed elderly passengers waited on another bus while the scene was cleared.

The driver has been charged with reckless driving.
