COLONIAL HEIGHTS, VA (WWBT) - A Colonial Heights father is demanding answers after his 5-year-old son is attacked by a dog while in his mother's care.
Dariyan Bland is now in the hospital, and police confirm they are now investigating.
"Somebody should be held accountable for it," said Bryan Bland, who has joint custody and is furious after seeing his son's condition. "It takes all my power and energy not to go to the hospital and act a fool."
The pit bull attack happened at a Pin Oak Court home that sports a beware of dog sign. The attack was so brutal the child's front teeth are gone. His neck is stitched from end to end.
Bryan Bland says he wants criminal neglect charges brought against the boy's mother.
"Charges are pending," said Colonial Heights Police Sgt. Robert Ruxer. "They have not been secured yet."
The family pet, Oreo, is now on a 10 day quarantine with animal control.
"I have no feelings for that dog," said Dariyan's mom who owned the dog. "It is gone. He won't be at my home."
The mother says she was at work and the babysitter saved her son's life.
"My older son had walked in to get something and within 15 seconds she heard him scream," she said. "So, no neglect at all."
Bryan Bland says his son is also getting a series of rabies shots. The other child was not hurt in the attack.
