RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A former Virginia beauty queen has been arrested and charged with assault and battery after an early morning domestic dispute.

According to Richmond Police, 26-year-old Brittany Nicole Poteet, "Nikki," was arrested March 18 shortly before 1 a.m. following a domestic dispute.

Officials say she was charged with misdemeanor assault and battery against a family or household member in the 100 block of West Marshall Street.

Poteet was Miss Virginia USA 2011 and former Miss United States 2012.

Poteet has made headlines before but not because of her crowning accomplishments.

According to Chris Wilbur, Director of the Miss United States Pageant Organization, Poteet was asked to give up her crown after she posted a photo on Facebook that shows she in her crown with the caption: Miss Alcoholic USA.

Wilbur said in a statement, "[Poteet's] character was not a good fit for the organization so we gave her the option to change or leave. She chose to leave."

However, the controversy doesn't end there.

In November 2011, Poteet made headlines when her roommate accused her of making gay slurs.

In a 2011 interview, Derek Powell told NBC12, "She became extremely violent calling myself a f -- and a c----. I just don't think that is a good role model for the Commonwealth of Virginia or young women or for anyone."

NBC12 contacted Poteet through Facebook. She denied the charges against her and had no further comment. We also spoke to the victim who did not want to comment.
