12 On Your Side: Woman complains about moving company

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A Henrico woman called 12 to complain about the moving company All My Sons based in Richmond. She plans to sue them after she says some of her things went missing, while other pieces were damaged after the company moved her.

Lois Johnson moved into her Henrico home last Wednesday, but said her furniture didn't move with her right away. Johnson said over the phone, the company gave her a quote for around $800, but she said that price changed once her furniture was loaded onto the moving trucks.

According to Johnson, the price increased from about $800 to $1,128.15. When Johnson said she didn't have the money, Johnson said, "the driver told me, 'Well you won't get your furniture then.'"

The next day, Johnson said she came up with the extra money but All My Sons didn't move her stuff until five days later. When they did, she said pieces were damaged or missing, including her blu-ray player and a diamond watch.

NBC12 went to All My Sons to get their side of the story but they didn't want to talk.

So NBC12 went to the Better Business Bureau. Its website shows the company has almost 50 complaints.

Tom Gallagher with the BBB said to beware of quotes over the phone because it is common for movers to up the price when they actually see your home and what needs to be moved.

"You want a company to come in and give a skilled appraisal of what it's going to cost," said Gallagher.

He also said to any price and contract in writing. "Unless you've gotten it all written out in your contract, you don't have those protections. We simply need to protect ourselves."

Johnson has now filed a civil complaint at the Henrico courthouse because she says the company hasn't returned her calls about her damaged and missing items.
