HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Bobby Ukrop has resigned from the University of Richmond Board of Trustees, according to several sources.

Ukrop resigned at the December 7 meeting of the board over the lack of transparency in the school's decision to cut soccer and track in favor of men's lacrosse, sources said.

"The university is deeply grateful for Bobby Ukrop's remarkable leadership and generosity over the course of many decades. His influence continues to touch every area of the university," the university said in a statement. "Likewise, his corporate and civic leadership, which has strengthened and enriched our community and region, serves as an outstanding example for students and fellow alumni."

The university announced it was cutting the soccer and track programs in September. Despite protests, they reaffirmed the decision earlier this month.

"Without placing additional demand on crucial resources of scholarships, positions in the class, operating funds or facilities, the reconfiguration permits the university to add a popular and growing sport and strengthen its other sports," the Board of Trustees said in a statement at the time that the decision.

Ukrop is a 1969 grad and longtime public supporter of the school and its athletic programs. He has served on the board three different times, totaling 13 years. There's an auditorium named for the Ukrop family inside the university's business school.
