CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Police are investigating a shooting that killed one north Chesterfield man. Police found 36-year-old Joshua Coomer dead on the 2800 block of Ennismore Court in the Newberry Towne Home community.

Officers found Coomer dead with a gunshot wound just before midnight.

One neighbor jumped out of bed when he heard all the commotion. He heard loud booms Thursday night.

"I jumped up because I thought my mom or somebody fell," said the neighbor who didn't want to be identified. "I saw police outside and said, 'What?' I'm thinking the paramedics were coming for someone who fell, and then I see the homicide investigators and then they pull up the yellow tape."

Forensics teams worked through the night and arrived again Friday shortly after family left the home.

Friends express their grief as they show up to offer their condolences. The property manager says a security guard called in the shooting thinking at first it was a medical emergency. Property records show Theresa Savage moved here in 1996 - and neighbors say Coomer lived with his mother and two children.

"It's kind of hurtful. They're quiet. The lady is perky, she's nice. They used to play with my pit bull in the backyard. She talks to us everyday.  The kids are real cool. They come play with my little sister. They're real cool."

Even though the property manager says security guards patrol the community frequently, the neighbor says he'd like to see more.

"They need to do more than what they did and they need to have more security than what they had," said the neighbor. "There's no way those people should have gotten away scot-free and that's too close to my house."

Police haven't identified any suspects or a motive at this time. If you know any information in this case, call Crime Solvers at: 748-0660.

The property manager says he would like to organize a meeting with the neighbor association and the police department to discuss further safety concerns.
