12 ON YOUR SIDE ALERT: Halloween Safety Apps
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Thousands of kids will hit-up local neighborhoods trick or treating. For parents, safety is a big concern. What you may not know is that safety can now be found in the palm of your hands.
It's that time of year again -- Ghosts and Ghouls, Zombies and Goblins. As your kids go door to door, there are some easy ways you can keep them safe. Joe Whitaker, with AT&T says if you have a smart phone, there are several Apps you will want to download this Halloween.
"There are tons of applications out there that can do any and everything for us. This time of year in particular, applications such as Family Map, it is really important to stay connected with your children when they are out in the streets because you just never know," Whitaker says.
Search any App Store and there's no shortage of Apps that will keep the little ones safe. ATT&T offers several suggestions.

Footsteps pedometer: http://footsteps.palmshadow.com/
There's the Guardly App that lets your child easily contact someone in case of danger. If you want to plan that perfect trick or treating route, there's the Navigation App. You can select walking or the driving mode.
A biggie for parents and maybe not so popular with the teens, is the Family Map App. With this one, you can keep a virtual eye on your children and monitor their every move. "We started seeing an increase about a week or so. Typically the younger children go out with their parents but the teenagers are what the parents are really concerned about," Whitaker explains.
We all need a flash light but instead of the old fashioned traditional one, all you need now is a simple download of the Flashlight App to light the way. "Stay bright and light outdoors, it always nice to have a light with you when you are traveling with your children," Whitaker says.
And we can't forget about the candy and the calories that come with it, yep, there is an App for that. It's the Footstep Pedometer. This App will count your steps and the calories you burn. If you are not tech savvy, no worries, there are instructions detailing how the Apps work and downloading is just a click of a button.
If you don't have at least one of these Safety Apps, Whitaker recommends you download one today. "When your children are out there trick or treating going door to door, strangers in different neighborhoods that they are not familiar with, kids are kids and they may fall astray and you never know who is going to be out there," Whitaker tells us.
He says you can't put a price on safety and most of the Apps are free to download but some may require a service charge, be sure to ask your carrier. Again, there are a number of Safety Apps out there. Check your phone's App Store and talk to your service provider about what will work best for you.
