CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A family dog had to be put down after being mauled by a raccoon in Brandermill. A message from the Brandermill Community Association said the attack happened early in the morning Tuesday in the Huntsbridge neighborhood.

The raccoon mauled a 15-year-old Cocker Spaniel and the dog's owner reportedly saw the whole thing happen and said the raccoon acted ill.

Another family dog, a Springer Spaniel, scared the raccoon away and up a tree, so it's unclear whether the animal has been caught. Though, one owner says he plans to build a trap to try to catch it.

In what appears to be a separate incident Thursday, animal control officers say they captured a raccoon behaving aggressively by the lake and that raccoon had to be put down.

Neighbors say raccoons are not unusual in Brandermill. They reported several stories about raccoons nesting in attics, fighting in the woods, and digging through trash cans.

"I saw one one time in that drain right there," said Kathy Cantrell. "After a rain he was drinking water."

"We're in the middle of the forest," said Alan Manden. "You expect to see a little wildlife. They run around on our roof every so often and you occasionally see them up in the trees."

"The neighbors behind me saw a little family of raccoons," recalled Cantrell. "A mom I guess and her baby raccoons when they drove in their driveway and could see their eyes."

After the attack, the Brandermill Community Association is warning pet owners to bring their animals inside at night, and not to leave food out for pets that might attract animals.
