RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – An update in the case of the 3-year-old boy shot in his Richmond home, Friday afternoon.
Police have arrested and charged the boy's father, 21-year-old Antwoine Mealey on felony child neglect and the boy's uncle, 19-year-old Tyrell Mealey for obstruction of justice.
At last check the little boy made it out of surgery and is in critical but stable condition.
By the time police got to the home where a 3-year-old child was shot, the boy was already getting prepped for surgery miles away at VCU Medical Center.
The investigation started there when hospital staff realized the child brought in, was suffering from a gunshot wound.
Police quickly traced the shooting back to this house on North 20th Street.
"I think that any shooting is hard and we're going to cover just like we'd any situation at any scene but knowing that there's a 3-year-old boy at the hospital with a gunshot wound with life threatening yeah, it's a little different," said Major Steve Drew of the Richmond Police Department.
With probable cause and a search warrant, investigators scoured the little boy's home.
"I can tell you that we have recovered evidence from inside the residence but I don't want to go into what that evidence is," said Drew.
Whatever that evidence is, it follows another big piece of evidence police collected. A gray dodge that police say was the car that transported the boy to the hospital.
Police still need the public's help in this case. If you know anything about this shooting, call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
