Memory of title game loss still fresh for VSU

ETTRICK, VA (WWBT) - Virginia State lost to Shaw in the CIAA title game in November, but it might as well have been yesterday.

The memory still sticks in the Trojans' minds as they prepare for 2011. The Trojans lost the game 14-7, just a play or two away from taking home the title.

"I'd rather get blown out then lose by one touchdown," admitted running back Antwain Lyde.

Monday night the team gathered at Foster Hall, along with the other fall sports teams as part of the "Meet the Trojans" celebration.

VSU returns Lyde, their leading rusher, plus junior quarterback Jarred Battle. Defensively, stars Jeremy Pruitt and Howard Spencer will be asked to step up to lead a group that gave up just 15.6 points per game last year.

The Trojans were picked to finish second in the Western Division, but they see no reason why they shouldn't be better than the team that went a surprising 8-3 last season.
