RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The nephew of a Richmond city council member pleaded guilty today to a shooting on the Virginia Union University campus.

Jimar Lee Jewell, 21, pleaded guilty to malicious wounding and a weapons charge. He is the nephew of Richmond city councilman Marty Jewell, who represents Richmond's 5th District.

Jewell shot former student Eric Suggs in the thigh and ankle in August during a large fight that broke out on campus between students and non students.

As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors withdrew a charge and agreed Jewell will serve no more than 10 years in prison. He had faced up to 23 years.

He will be sentenced in June.
