Gov. Kaine honors families of fallen firefighters

From NBC12 News

HENRICO, VA (NBC12) - Virginia paused Saturday to remember those who have paid the ultimate price, while protecting us at home.

Hundreds gathered at the Richmond Raceway Complex to honor the four Virginia firefighters who were killed in the line of duty this past year.

Two were from the Virginia Beach area, one from Harrisonburg and another from Northern Virginia.

Governor Tim Kaine acknowledged how difficult it is for the families of those firefighters to attend this annual service.

"These family members have grieved, they've suffered, they've had their own memorial services. Sometimes coming back for an annual memorial service like this can kind of reopen some wounds and be painful. But as I told them, we're not ready to let their loved ones go yet. And that's why we do this every year, to honor their sacrifice," said Kaine.

Similar services were held last month to honor slain police officers.
