Volunteer coach goes beyond the game to uplift underserved kids

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - When kids take to the soccer field on game day they’re not sure if they will take home the win, but one thing they can always count on is Coach Jermaine Melson.

“It’s very important to show up because many of these kids don’t have people that do that,” Robyn Parsons said. Parsons is the co-founder of Bobcats Sports League, a youth development program providing an outlet for at-risk youth in south Richmond through sports.

The group’s success is in part thanks to the unwavering dedication of volunteers like Melson.

Nine years and over 1,000 volunteer hours later Melson has learned it’s more than just a game.
