Double-shooting leaves 1 juvenile dead in Chesterfield

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) - Chesterfield police said one juvenile is dead and another is injured following a shooting.

Police were called around 5:30 p.m. to a shooting at Belmont Hills Apartments.

At the scene, officers found the body of a juvenile male. Another juvenile victim was found a short distance away with non-life-threatening injuries. The victim was taken to the hospital.

The family identified the victim killed as 16-year-old Cameron Watkins

For several hours, police stood outside of an apartment unit, telling whoever is inside to come out with their hands up.

“Belmont is so quiet and for them to get crazy like this, it don’t make no sense. It’s getting crazy out here now. They got the drone out here now looking for this man. This is crazy for Belmont, little ole Belmont,” said Kanyia Taylor, who lives in the area.

Family said the Watkins lived at the apartment complex, and that he loved sports - football and gymnastics.

“I loved my baby,” Watkins’ mother said.

“This violence is taking over our youth. We need to get more restrictions on gun laws and how these kids are getting ahold of firearms because they’re dying too young, and we need our future to grow,” said Juhahn Robinson, who lives in the area.
