RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Today a senate subcommittee is set to take up a measure that would put Virginia one step closer to legalizing recreational marijuana.
The bill would eliminate criminal penalties for possession of pot for those 21 years of age and older.
It would also impose a 21-percent tax on retail marijuana sales and nearly half of those tax profits would go to Pre-K programs for at-risk three and four-year-olds.
If the bill is passed and signed into law, it would not take effect until January 1, 2023.
