DINWIDDIE, Va. (WWBT) - Two dogs died in a house fire on Monday morning after they woke a man up, allowing him to escape the blaze.

Dinwiddie Fire and EMS were called just before 6:30 a.m. on Jan. 18 to a house fire in the 12000 block of Old Stage Road.

Officials said initial calls indicated there were two dogs and a person still inside the house. While on route, crews were told the person had escaped and went to a home across the street.

When crews did arrive, they found heavy fire and smoke coming through the front of the home.

EMS crews treated the man who escaped for smoke inhalation and took him to the hospital.

While fire crews searched the building, they found two dogs that had died.

Before EMS took the man to the hospital, he said he was sleeping at the time of the fire and the two dogs had jumped on him to wake up, allowing him to escape the fire.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
