Sheriff’s office: Man fires at deputies responding to home alarm
POWHATAN, Va. (WWBT) - A Powhatan County man has been charged after officials say he fired at deputies responding to a home alarm.
Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office was called to a home alarm in the 300 block of Bellson Lane around 1 a.m. on Wednesday.
Deputies found the home’s front door open and when they announced their presence, the sheriff’s office said the deputies were immediately fired upon from outside the home.
Additional units from Powhatan and Chesterfield responded to secure the scene.
Officials said the man accused of firing the shots was found on an adjacent property inside a structure.
The sheriff’s office said Michael Andrew Layman, 50, was identified as the homeowner and set off his own home alarm.
Layman is charged with two counts of attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer and one count of recklessly handling a firearm.
No one was injured during the incident.
The investigation continues.
