Demonstrations in Capitol Square canceled Monday, protective wall to go up

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - The Virginia Department of General Services said all planned permitted demonstrations for Monday, which is Lobby Day, are canceled at Capitol Square.

The Square will be closed to the public on Monday, and likely a few days before and after.

The DGS also says new fortifications, including fencing, will go up around Virginia State Capitol grounds.

This comes as the FBI is warning about armed protests at all 50 state capitals following the deadly insurrection at the United States Capitol.

A State of Emergency has also been declared in Richmond following credible threats of planned protests leading up to President-elect Joe Biden’s Inauguration on Jan. 20.

Virginia Capitol Police report they have been planning with law enforcement partners as they prepare for the 2021 General Assembly session.
