Mechanicsville dog set to debut in 2021 Puppy Bowl

Mechanicsville puppy to be featured in Puppy Bowl

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. (WWBT) - Dog lovers rejoice! The 17th annual Puppy Bowl is set to go on just ahead of the Super Bowl.

The special will feature 70 pups and this year Milky Way (adoption name) from Mechanicsville, now known as Alabama, will be featured in this year’s Puppy Bowl on Team Fluff.

Alabama, a Boxer/American Staffordshire Terrier (Pit)/Catahoula Leopard Dog mix, is named after Alabama Shakes.

She’s a 6-month-old pup that has a lot of personality.

“She is a true social-lite, every dog park she goes to she says hi to every human and every dog,” said owner, Erin Kennedy.

Four months ago, Erin adopted Alabama from Operation Paws for Homes.

“It was something about her. I don’t even know what it was but when I saw her - she was just this small round little roll and I reached out as fast as I could,” said Kennedy.

As the filming process and Erin’s adoption process was playing out, Erin was told her pup would be old enough to take part and asked if it would be OK to put little Milky Way in the contest.

“I said ‘sure, absolutely,’” said Kennedy.

From there, Milky Way went through the process and Animal Planet chose her.

“It’s really exciting,” said Kennedy. “She went up there with one of her sisters [Comet] and they had a road trip,” said Kennedy.

Since the taping, Erin hasn’t seen the show yet, but she says she is excited to watch her do what she does best - play.

“I don’t know anything, I have no idea. I have gotten a couple of pictures, that’s it. It’s going to be some much fun. She’s probably perfect for this bowl like she just plays with everything and every dog,” said Kennedy.

The Puppy Bowl set to air on Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. on Discovery Plus and Animal Planet.
