Ideas for setting new family goals in the new year
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - If you’re looking for a fresh start for your family in 2021, now is a great time to set some family goals.
Whether your kids are learning on laptops or wearing masks to class, this year looks really different for families.
So, how can you make the most of it? Emmie Croxford with Richmond Mom Collective has some ideas.
“It is the perfect time to get started with some new goals that you can do with your entire family that are easy and you can really sustain them. I think that is the most important thing... is doing things that are sustainable and don’t feel like a huge huge change,” Croxford said.
She suggests starting with things that help everyone stay organized. For example, plan to prepare for school the night before by setting out clothes and charging Chromebooks.
“We talked about having kindness and gratitude, so those things are important as well,” said Croxford. “I think that you know it’s been a year of looking at the little blessings. And you know, it’s not as hard to find when you start to develop a practice of doing it every single day.”
Another great reminder for anyone is remembering to model your own behavior for your kids. It’s a great goal for teaching your kids how to handle hard things such as apologies and overcoming mistakes.
“These are super simple things that anybody can do, and they are sustainable. These are things we can do every day, and you know what? If we forget it today, do it tomorrow. Do it later in the day. They don’t have to be done first thing in the morning,” Croxford said.
If you need help with ideas for your goal setting, the American Academy of Pediatrics put out a list of age-appropriate goals for preschoolers through teenagers. Everything from picking up toys, to being friendly to peers having a hard time, to driving without using a cell phone.
Another fun idea is the 1,000 Hours Outside Challenge, which is meant to compete with screentime.
