BLACKSBURG, Va. (WWBT) - Virginia Tech quarterback Hendon Hooker announced on Thursday that he would be entering the transfer portal following his graduation in December. Hooker broke the news on social media.

“This is one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make,” Hooker wrote on his post. “Being a Hokie has been an unforgettable experience.”

Hooker took over for an injured Ryan Willis in 2019 and led Virginia Tech to victories in his first six starts. He started 15 games during the last two years for the Hokies. In eight contests this season, Hooker threw for 1,339 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions. He also found the endzone nine times on the ground.

Of the three quarterbacks who began the season competing for the starting job, Braxton Burmeister will be the only one remaining on the roster when Hooker leaves. Quincy Patterson announced his intention to transfer last month. Burmeister transferred from Oregon and, after sitting out last season, saw action in seven games during the campaign.

Hooker is the third starting quarterback to depart the program early under Fuente. Jerod Evans left to pursue a professional career after the head coach’s first season in Blacksburg in 2016. 2017 starter Josh Jackson eventually transferred to Maryland and Hooker topped the depth chart for a majority of the last two years.

The quarterback was not the only player to announce his departure on Thursday. Running back Khalil Herbert announced that he will not use his option for an extra season and instead enter the NFL Draft.

Virginia Tech finished 2020 with a 5-6 record, jumping out to a 4-2 start before stumbling to a four game losing streak. The Hokies finished on a high note, topping arch rival Virginia, 33-15, to end the campaign. Athletic director Whit Babcock announced on Tuesday that Fuente would remain the team’s head coach.
