CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WWBT) - After missing a handful of games due to COVID-19 complications, be it within its own program or another, Virginia men’s basketball added a marquee opponent on Thursday.

The Cavaliers will face top-ranked Gonzaga on December 26 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, TX. Tip-off is set for 4:00 PM ET. It marks the fourth meeting between the programs with the Zags winning two of the previous three match-ups. UVA was victorious the last time the two teams faced off in January of 2007, 108-87. Sean Singletary scored 37 points in the victory.

Virginia is resuming practice on Saturday after halting activities because of coronavirus within the program. The last game for the Cavaliers was a December 4 overtime win over Kent State, before pausing on December 9.

COVID-19 issues within the Wahoos or a scheduled opponent have caused cancellations of several high-profile contests involving UVA. A November 27 meeting with Florida was called off after the Gators experienced coronavirus. Games with Michigan State and Villanova have also been cancelled.

Gonzaga is 3-0 with wins over Kansas, Auburn and West Virginia, but the Bulldogs have not played a game since December 2, seeing five contests cancelled. They’re scheduled to face Iowa on Saturday.

Virginia, which is ranked 17th in this week’s AP Top 25, will get back to game action on Tuesday against William & Mary. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 PM at John Paul Jones Arena.
