HANOVER Co., Va. (WWBT) - Virginia State Police said a vehicle towing a trailer that had caught on fire led police on a chase in Hanover County on Tuesday evening.

On Nov. 17 around 6 p.m., a trooper saw a 2006 GMC Envoy traveling west on the Mechanicsville Turnpike, west of the Pamunkey River. Officials said the Envoy was towing a trailer that had caught fire.

“The trooper activated his vehicle’s emergency equipment in an attempt to get the Envoy to stop, but the driver refused and continued west on Route 360,” state police said.

Officials say the Envoy crossed the median and began heading west in the eastbound lanes of Route 360 near Pole Green Road before crossing back through the median to the westbound lanes.

VSP said they positioned their vehicles around the Envoy and got it to stop around Walnut Grove Road.

“The trailer dislodged itself from the Envoy in the 5000 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike. While traveling the wrong way on Mechanicsville Turnpike, the Envoy struck two vehicles and a mailbox,” state police said.

No injuries were reported in those crashes.

The driver, a 48-year-old man from North Carolina, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
