RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - As the peak season for mailing packages nears, the United States Postal Service is reminding customers to look at shipping restrictions, prohibited items and other requirements before sending.
As a reminder, here are some things that cannot be sent through the mail:
- Mercury (including items which contain mercury such as thermometers)
Some items, like alcohol, perfumes, aerosols and batteries, are restricted. For more information on restricted or prohibited items, visit this website.
If you’re reusing a box, it’s best to remove any labels or markings associated with hazardous materials.
There are also restrictions on sizes and weight for different packages, which also impacts the shipping cost.
Packages sent within the U.S. can’t weigh more than 70 pounds or more than 108 inches in length and around the widest part of the package. All packages must be large enough to hold the required delivery and return addresses, mailing labels and postage on the outside of the package.
