(WWBT) - On May 21, 1881, Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross at the age of 59.

Known as the “Angel of the Battlefield,” Clara tended to wounded soldiers all across Virginia during the Civil War. She would also go on to lead efforts to recover the remains of the dead.
