Police: Man surrenders after barricading himself inside with children

HOPEWELL, Va. (WWBT) - A hostage situation in Hopewell came to an end Tuesday night two hours after a man holed himself up inside of a home with two children.

Police were called around 4 p.m. on Tuesday to the 1100 block of High Avenue for an active disturbance involving a female and her ex-husband.

She was able to flee the residence with one child, however, her ex-husband had barricaded himself in the house with two other children.

It was a chaotic moment for Johnny Gonzalez and his family right as he was cooking dinner for the kids.

“He told me ‘dad, there’s cops right in front of the house’,” Gonzalez said. “They were just taking cover behind my car because it’s right in front of the house.”

When they opened the door, police told them to get back inside. Hopewell police were trying to get a man to come out after his ex-wife told them he had weapons inside and threatened to harm himself with two small children were inside of the home.

"Cops don’t come suited like that for no reason at all,” Gonzalez said he knew he had to keep his family safe. “I told them ‘just stay in the kitchen.’ If bullets fly or something, at least we have two walls between us.”

One of his daughter's couldn't even get home.

"I’m like, what am I going to do?” Krystal Gonzalez said. Roads were closed and no one could get close to the scene. “I started thinking ‘my family is at home. My younger brother is at home.’”

Soon police would approach a white duplex after evacuating nearby neighbors. They stayed for about two hours until the man finally came outside after sending out the two small children first. Officers could be seen picking up the children and taking them away to safety.

"At least he did the right thing. He sent them out first and then he surrendered,” Gonzalez said. “This is actually the first time I’ve ever seen...a SWAT team in front of my house using my car as a shield.”

Officers continue to investigate the incident and information will be updated as soon as it becomes available.

Police have not released what charges the suspect might face.
