NWS confirms tornado in Northern Virginia

LEESBURG, Va. (AP) - The National Weather Service has confirmed EF-0 tornado touched down Friday morning in Leesburg as storms moved across Virginia.

The NWS service said the twister has maximum wind speeds of 85 mph with a width of 250 yards. The tornado was on the ground for about three minutes, only traveling 3.3 miles.

The tornado uprooted several trees and caused some damage to buildings.

Meteorologist Isha Renta told The Associated Press by phone on Friday that the weather service is also assessing damage in the Maryland counties of Carroll, Frederick and Montgomery.

She said the service is also reviewing data from radars in the area.
