Longwood University lockdown lifted after report of gunshots; 1 charged

FARMVILLE, Va. (WWBT) - Longwood Univerisity has lifted its lockdown after the report of gunshots near the intersection of Putney and Main streets.

According to Longwood University alerts, when police got to the scene, the suspects had already left. Out of the abundance of caution, campus police placed the university on lockdown to ensure the grounds were safe.

Officers checked the campus and the lockdown was lifted around 11:10 p.m.

Farmville police say they determined multiple shots had been fired in the McDonald’s parking lot along South Main Street, and two parked vehicles were struck.

Witnesses told police they saw several people running away.

While searching the area, police found Javon Brooks, 19, of Farmville, hiding in a wooded area just off Putney Street and was in possession of a handgun.

Brooks was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and reckless handling of a firearm. He is being held at Piedmont Regional Jail without bond.
