(WWBT) - On this day, Dec. 18, 1865, the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is certified by Secretary of State William Seward.

The amendment officially abolished slavery in the United States, 246 years after the first slaves arrived on the shores of Virginia in 1619.
