Man dies of injuries after losing control of vehicle, striking tree during police chase

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) - A man has died of his injuries after he lost control of his vehicle and striking a tree during a police chase early Saturday morning.

Shortly after 2 a.m. on Nov. 9, a Chesterfield officer saw a vehicle speeding on Old Hundred Road. The officer then saw it turn onto Scottwood Road and turned around in a driveway.

The driver, later identified as 61-year-old James C. Jackson III, of Chesterfield, got out of his vehicle and approached the officer’s car. The officer then got out and started talking to Jackson, who then tried getting back in his vehicle. The officer ordered him not to get back in and blocked Jackson from getting inside the vehicle.

Jackson then pushed the officer and walked away. The officer followed and told him to stop before Jackson ran behind a house. The officer chased him and he was able to get back in the car and take off. The officer then followed.

Jackson turned onto Old Hundred Road from Scottwood Road and soon lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree.

He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and later died at the hospital on Nov. 9.

Police continue to investigate.
