OHIO CO., Ky. (WFIE) - A mother is in custody, accused of trying to sell her child.
34-year old Crystal Smiley is facing a couple of charges. According to Kentucky State Police, Smiley was arrested Tuesday after a month-long investigation.
Smiley is being charged with the sale or purchase of a child for adoption and promoting Human trafficking.
“Well she was indicted this month and she’s been served with her warrant," said Ohio County Commonwealth Attorney Blake Chambers. “The date of the offense we believe happened around sometime in July of this year.”
Kentucky State Police say the initial investigation started last month when social services notified them that Smiley was trying to sell her child to a family member.
According to Smiley's indictment, she attempted to convince her sister Mellissa Goodman "to provide her with cash or a camper in exchange for terminating her rights to a minor child."
Ohio County resident Justin Stewart says being a father himself makes it hard to hear about something like this if she is convicted of the charges.
“It blows my mind that somebody wouldn’t value their child more than that," said Stewart. "You know it kind of makes me sick to my stomach thinking someone would do something like that.”
According to Kentucky State Police, Smiley is being held in the Ohio County Detention Center on a $25,000 bond. She is scheduled to be arraigned October 24 in Ohio County.
