HENRICO, Va. (WWBT) - A 61-year-old accused of murdering his stepson was denied bond Thursday morning.
Randolph Smith is charged with second-degree murder in the killing of Neil Waters, 40, Wednesday morning.
Police responded to a reported shooting around 8:45 a.m. in the 1500 block of Edenburry Drive and found Waters dead.
“We’ve never had that in our neighborhood,” John Dunville said.
“I’m getting text messages back-and-forth from my neighbors, do you know what’s going on?” Seth Rosenthal said.
No one ever suspected the peace of the Henrico neighborhood would become so violently interrupted.
“I walk this street here everyday usually two to three times a day. It’s really quiet...I usually walk here and they stopped me. They wouldn’t let me walk in," Dunville said.
Nearby Carver Elementary sent a text alert to parents saying, “We called a brief and precautionary lock and teach this morning due to some police activity in a neighborhood near the school.” The principal says the precaution was lifted within minutes.
“I hate to see if it’s taking someone’s life because it’s just sad for everybody - for the person who lost their lives, for the person who has to face the charges, for that which they should, but (also for) the community," Rosenthal said.
Police have not identified a motive in the crime.
