RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Richmond police say a death investigation is underway after a body was found near the Manchester Bridge.
Richmond police say they responded at 12:06 p.m. to the 400 block of South 9th Street after someone called in seeing a body on a rock out on the river.
Police identified the man as David M. Andrews, 45, of Hampton.
Firefighters initially took a boat out on the water to check on the person, before he was pronounced dead at 12:46 p.m.
“It’s scary,” said Jason Smith, who watched most of the incident unfold.
He was passing through when he noticed the commotion under the bridge.
“I went on top of the bridge, I looked down, I couldn’t see nothing. Then I went back to the other side and I saw the body," he said.
Ksinia Turner says the area where the body was found is one of the more popular spots in the city, calling that section of Brown’s Island “a place that people come to enjoy their time."
The incident gives her pause as it happened so close to a trail she says she comes to at least every few weeks.
“I take the path down by the river and go through the rapids down by the railroad tracks, so it’s definitely very shocking and scary," Turner said.
Richmond Police say the medical examiner is still determining the official cause of death. No foul play is expected at this time.
