Fire destroys Chesterfield home

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) - A fire caused heavy damage to a home in the 13100 block of Singer Road on Friday.

Chesterfield responded to a call for the house fire around 4 p.m., but the brick home was fully engulfed upon arrival.

Heavy flames were seen coming through the home’s roof and most of the roof was destroyed by the blaze.

The fire burned away the stairs inside the home and firefighters had to use ladders to access the upper floor.

Dawn Hobbs lives just down the road from the fire. Hobbs and dozens of other neighbors watched in disbelief as fire crews battle the blaze.

“It’s terrifying,” Hobbs said. “This neighborhood in the last couple of years.”

Neighbors said a roofing company spent the past three weeks replacing the roof of this home and finished their work around noon Friday, just hours before the fire started.

Neighbors said the homeowner James Dorton built this home in the 90s and lived there ever since with his wife and three children.

“If there’s anything that they need, just let us know,” Hobbs said. “The whole neighborhood would rally around them. That’s the type of neighborhood it is.”

Dorton was out of town at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
