Special Olympic athletes share special friendship

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - The Special Olympics of Virginia are just three weeks away, as athletes from all across the commonwealth will visit Richmond to compete and support each other.

A group of six athletes at the Virginia Home in Richmond discovered on Thursday that they have all qualified for the games. Among them are Amanda Jackson and Janet Dinkel. They’ve been best friends since 2011 and do pretty much everything together, including practice for the Special Olympics, swim, and relax during their free time.

The two have been there for each other during difficult times, as well. Both athletes recently lost their mothers, but have a strong family and support system to lean on. Both families and good friends of each will attend the Special Olympics to cheer on both Amanda and Janet.

The Special Olympics of Virginia Opening Ceremony will be held on June 7 at the Robins Center on the campus of the University of Richmond.
