Driver charged, asked to pay $25K after pileup in Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel

Crashes closes Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel

HAMPTON ROADS, VA (WWBT) - One person faces charges in an eight-vehicle crash that shut down all travel lanes of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel on Wednesday morning.

No one was seriously injured in the crash, according to Virginia State Police, which occurred at 8:22 a.m.

State police say a box truck traveling east on I-64 swerved to avoid slowing traffic.

“The (bucket) truck swerved into the path of a tanker-truck, which caused the tanker-truck to strike the tunnel wall,” Virginia State Police said. “The (bucket) truck jack-knifed into the tractor trailer, which sparked a chain reaction of vehicles crashing in the eastbound lanes inside the HRBT.”

William Lewis Alexander Marakos, the driver of the bucket truck, was charged with following too close, according to WAVY.

State police officials say Marakos will also be sent a bill of $25,000 in damages from the crash.

WAVY also reports that the tanker was carrying tar as hot as 300 degrees.

The tanker-truck was filled with hot tar.

The tunnel reopened just after 11 a.m.
