RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Governor Ralph Northam ceremonially signed a bill making all public schools in Virginia tobacco-free.

The signing took place Tuesday morning at JR Tucker High School.

In February, Northam signed legislation banning e-cigarettes and vapes on all public school property, including on buses and at school sponsored events.

Senator David Marsden (D-Fairfax) co-sponsored Senate Bill 1295. He says it’s a move in the right direction.

"In the long run, this stuff has terrible, terrible repercussions for your health and your life and your family, so this is just a great step in moving us forward,” Marsden said.

The law takes effect July 1.
