DINWIDDIE, VA (WWBT) - Parents in Dinwiddie received a notice that a student at Southside Elementary School contracted scarlet fever.
Scarlet fever is a rash caused by strep A bacteria.
Parents of students whose children are in the same class and ride the bus with the infected child were notified to watch for symptoms in their children.
The Virginia Health Department said scarlet fever is a mild infection. It takes two to five days after exposure for symptoms to develop.
Scarlet fever usually begins with a fever or sore throat and a rash usually appears a day or two later.
Scarlet fever is treatable with antibiotics.
