Franklin Military Academy sends balloon nearly into space

Franklin Military Academy launches science balloon

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Middle school students at Franklin Military Academy in Richmond launched a “high-altitude balloon” Thursday as part of a capstone project.

The weather balloon soared into Earth's upper atmosphere nearly reaching space.

Students put computers, a GPS tracker, a radio and cameras underneath the balloon to hopefully get a glimpse the darkness of space, and track where it will eventually land.

“This one is going out towards New Kent,” chemistry teacher Norm Marshall said. “It's not going to quite go to the Middle Peninsula. The one we did a couple years ago went all the way to Kilmarnok in the Northern Neck, so it all depends on the wind and weather predictions and things like that."

Franklin Military Academy is the nation’s oldest public military school.
