HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - Jay Woolfolk tripled and scored in the 10th inning, breaking a tie and giving Benedictine a 4-3 extra inning triumph over Hanover in a battle of two of the area’s top baseball teams on Monday night.
The scoring began in the second inning, where the Hawks were the first to strike. Chase Hustead’s bunt drew an errant throw to first, allowing the first run to score. Two more runs would come across when Caydon Richardson hit a grounder to second base and the throw home was off the mark, giving Hanover a 3-0 lead after two innings.
It would remain that way until the top of the fourth, when Jack Anderson hit a ground ball to the shortstop and the throw went over the head of the first baseman. A run scored to trim the lead to 3-1.
Woolfolk would blast a solo home run in the sixth inning to pull the Cadets to within a run, and Benedictine would score again in the seventh to force extra frames.
Pitching and defense would prevail until the 10th, when Woolfolk scored on a throwing error following his lead-off triple to plate the eventual winning run.
Benedictine improves to 23-2, while the Hawks fall to 15-1 on the season.
