CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (WWBT) - The University of Virginia men’s basketball team will not be visiting the White House.
Head coach Tony Bennett said it would be difficult to facilitate a trip to Washington, DC, due to players pursuing NBA careers.
Bennett said, “We have received inquiries about a visit to the White House. With several players either pursuing pro opportunities or moving on from UVA, it would be difficult, if not impossible to get everyone back together. We would have to respectfully decline an invitation.”
Four members of the team have declared for the NBA draft.
Neither of the two previous NCAA men’s basketball champions visited the White House, though 2018 champion Villanova said it was not invited.
NCAA women’s basketball national champion Baylor said it accepted an invitation to visit the White House.
Several prominent athletes have declined invitations to the White House after winning championships due to political disagreements with President Donald Trump.
