2 injured after fleeing vehicle causes crash; driver charged with DUI

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - A vehicle fleeing police was involved in a crash just before 8 p.m. Thursday in Petersburg at West Street and Washington Street.

Petersburg police said a vehicle fleeing Chesterfield police struck another vehicle not involved in the pursuit, sending two women to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Chesterfield police said a chase was initiated after an officer attempted to stop a vehicle on Chesterfield Avenue. The vehicle did not comply and fled, eventually entering Petersburg and disregarding a red light at the intersection of West Washington Street and South West Street, when the crash occurred.

The driver of the fleeing vehicle fled on foot, but was apprehended after a short distance by police.

The suspect, 35-year-old Yahboshau Y. Newton, was charged out of Chesterfield with DUI second offense, driving with a revoked license and defective equipment. Additional charges are pending out of Petersburg.

The crash remains under investigation.
