Suspect arrested in Hopewell gun store robbery

HOPEWELL, VA (WWBT) - A Hopewell man was arrested following the robbery of a gun store.

Police responded to Liberty Firearms & Surplus in the 400 block of S. 15th Street at 12:01 p.m. April 24 for the report of a strong-arm robbery.

Two of the store’s employees pursued the suspect outside the store and one was engaged in an active struggle. Prior to police arriving, the man assaulted one of the store’s employees and fled on foot.

Officers arrested Matthew R. Eagan, 26, of Hopewell, a short distance away. He faces charges of robbery and assault.

An investigation discovered Eagan allegedly entered the store to purchase a firearm for the specific type of ammunition he owned. While an employee was showing him a handgun, he grabbed the gun and fled the store.

One of the employees was struck in the face and suffered a severe laceration during the confrontation outside the building. He was taken to a hospital where he was treated and released.

The stolen firearm was recovered.

Eagan was incarcerated at Riverside Regional Jail, pending an arraignment. He is also wanted in Colonial Heights on a misdemeanor theft charge.
