Franklin County, Va. tornado rated an EF3

FRANKLIN Co., Va. (WDBJ7/WWBT) -- The tornado that touched down in Franklin County Friday morning has been rated an EF3 by the National Weather Service in Blacksburg.

According to the NWS, the tornado reached an estimated maximum wind speed of 159 mph.

An EF3 Tornado is ranked 136 to 165 mph, making Friday morning’s tornado nearly an EF4 which reaches speeds of 166 mph to 200 mph.

According the the report, the tornado was on the ground for 8.2 miles and had a maximum width of 250 yards.

The NWS said the tornado caused significant damage to three structures while heavily damaging or destroying 10 outbuildings.

Thankfully, no one was killed due to the tornado, but two people were injured, according to the NWS report.

The tornado touched down at 10:25 a.m.
