HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - It’s prom weekend for Godwin High School in Henrico, and in preparation, teens are learning about how to stay safe behind the wheel. Tuesday the school hosted a driving program put on by AAA. Students were able to drive golf carts using drunk goggles.
AAA says the top three causes for teen crashes are speeding, alcohol and distraction.
“If they go out and make that bad mistake of drinking under the age of 21, I don't want them to make that second bad mistake and get behind the wheel,” said Haley Glynn, AAA.
According to data from the state DMV, last year, nearly 5,000 crashes involving teen drivers happened between April 1st and June 30th, which is peak prom and graduation season.
