VDOT urges people to "drive like you work here"

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The Virginia Department of Transportation is asking drivers to "drive like you work here" when going through construction zones.

According to VDOT, there were around 2,500 work zone crashes across the state last year.

VDOT has the following tips for safety when driving through a work zone:

  • Stay focused. Don’t use your phone, change the radio or eat.
  • Don’t tailgate.
  • Don’t speed. You could face a fine of up to $500 if you do.
