RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - If you’re already dreading another holiday drive for the traffic and the cost, don’t even think about keeping your kids busy for the trip. No really, DON’T. We’ve got you covered on that.
Whether it’s packing the car, or cramming a suitcase, holiday travel is always a heavy “load.” Add kids to the mix, and there’s SO MUCH STUFF.
“Holiday travel can come with kids trapped in tight spaces," said Christine Eglersma, with Common Sense Media. "So, that can get a little dicey for parents and kids so it’s great to kind of vary the activities. You can play ‘I spy’ and ’20 questions,' but after a while, you can run out so devices can definitely come in handy.”
The best apps for traveling with kids are those that work even when wireless doesn’t.
“Usually the best apps for travel are the ones that don’t require connectivity," said Elgersma, “and that provide an experience that’s open ended.”
Those apps let kids tell the stories and “let’ kids reset the experience over and over,” she said.
You can also download apps that involve a long puzzle so "it’s not going to be sort of one and done so they play it and then they’re finished.”
And Common Sense breaks it down by what they’re learning, whether it’s math or science, coding or listening.
Common Sense also breaks down apps by cost, whether apps are age appropriate, whether there’s violence or not, and how easy it is to play.
“At least a subscription app will evolve with the kid and there’ll be new content added so it’s the gift that keeps on giving,” said Elgersma.
And it might be the gift that keeps on giving for tired, traveling parents, too.
