ORANGE COUNTY, VA (WWBT) - Deputies in Orange County are searching for an armed intruder who broke into a home through an unlocked door while residents were inside.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the 18000 block of Blue Ridge Turnpike for an armed intruder into a residence. Virginia State Police and Conservation Officers from the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries also responded to set up a perimeter around the house.
When officials arrived, the victims said they were sitting inside the home when a person came through the unlocked front door.
A dog challenged the intruder at the door, who then fired a shot. The people inside were able to escape out another door and get to safety. The intruder was still believed to be inside.
Conservation officers and troopers held the perimeter until a Virginia State Police TAC Team arrived. They cleared the scene and found no one was inside.
The intruder is described as wearing dark colored clothing, 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-9 tall with a lean build, and may have been wearing a ski mask. The suspect had a handgun at the time of the intrusion.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at (540) 672-1200. Residents are also advised to keep windows and doors locked.
